Dungeon Settlers Level Up Guide and Level Cap

Quick answer: There is no experience bar in Dungeon Settlers. Settlers level up by praying at a Goddess Statue and spending mana stones, and the level cap in the current Early Access build is 6 — not 12. The number 12 comes from the official roadmap's V1.0 target, estimated for the third quarter of 2028.

There is no experience bar — that is not a bug

The most common question about progression on the Steam forums is where the experience bar is. The answer is that the game does not have one. Settlers do not accumulate experience from kills at all.

Instead, levelling is a settlement action. You build a Goddess Statue, bring a settler to it, and pray. The cost is paid in mana stones, which come out of the dungeon. That is the whole loop, and it explains why players who go looking for an XP bar never find one.

Unlocking the Goddess Statue

The statue is gated behind research, and the chain trips up new players because none of it is obvious:

  1. Research Basic Wood Processing.
  2. Build a Carpenter Workstation.
  3. Turn logs into planks there — each plank costs three logs.
  4. Spend three planks on the Goddess Statue.

Until that is done, nobody in your settlement can level at all, no matter how deep you have been.

What praying costs, and what it gives

Praying consumes mana stones, and you choose how generous the offering is. The three tiers are:

OfferingMana stonesStat gain
Minimal2Reduced
Normal (default)4Standard
Plentiful8+50%

How much a stat actually rises is driven mostly by the settler's aptitude for that stat — the same growth system that decides whether a recruit is worth hiring in the first place.

Each level-up also offers four traits chosen from five common options, and an uncommon trait can appear in that roll. If none of them suit the settler, you can spend another four mana stones to reroll the trait selection. That reroll is the reason the Steam thread on first level-ups reports being able to reroll dozens of times on a plentiful offering and hundreds on a minimal one — the cheaper the offering, the more rerolls a given pile of stones buys.

Costs climb fast, and the Temple discounts them

Offering costs scale with level. By the time a settler reaches level 4, a normal-tier offering runs to 64 units.

The building the statue sits in matters, because a Temple discounts sacrifices by its quality grade: a poor Temple takes 10% off, a mediocre one 20%. Room quality is set by floor area (a Temple needs a room of at least 30), flooring, and decoration — the same room-quality system that also boosts crafting and research efficiency elsewhere in the settlement.

Level 5 is the wall

Lesser mana stones stop being enough partway up. Reaching level 5 requires Intermediate Mana Stones, and those are not something the first region hands out — a full playthrough of the first region up to floor 4 turned up none, and the first ones appeared in the second region, dropped by Gloth.

Since the current cap is 6, that means only the last two levels of the entire Early Access build depend on intermediate stones, and those stones live behind the difficulty cliff of the second region. In practice: level 5 is the point where your progression stops being a settlement problem and starts being a survival problem.

The cap is 6, and one popular wiki has this wrong

Three independent checks agree that the current cap is 6:

A competing Dungeon Settlers wiki states that the level cap is 12. That number is real, but it is the V1.0 target from the roadmap, estimated for Q3 2028 — a planned future value presented as a current one. If you are budgeting mana stones around a cap of 12 today, you are planning for a build that does not exist yet.

The roadmap's full progression plan reads: cap 7 in Update 5 with third-tier skills, cap 9 in Update 6, and cap 12 at V1.0 with fourth-tier skills. See the roadmap page for the rest of it.

Inscriptions and why raising your own beats recruiting

Settlers you raise from level 1 end up stronger than high-level recruits, and the Steam boards are consistent on why: a settler you level yourself absorbs more mana stones over their career, and you get to choose their inscriptions rather than inheriting whatever a recruit came with. Inscriptions have rarity grades — grey is common, green uncommon, blue and above higher.

That is the same conclusion the recruiting page reaches from the other direction: current stats are the least useful number on a candidate card.

FAQ

What is the level cap in Dungeon Settlers right now?

6, in the current Early Access build. The roadmap raises it to 7 in Update 5, 9 in Update 6, and 12 at V1.0, which is estimated for Q3 2028.

Why can I not find an XP bar?

Because there is not one. Levelling happens at the Goddess Statue and is paid for in mana stones, not earned from combat.

How many mana stones does a level cost?

It depends on the offering tier and the settler's level: 2, 4 or 8 stones at the low levels, rising to 64 units at a normal offering by level 4. A poor Temple takes 10% off, a mediocre one 20%.

Can I reroll a bad trait offer?

Yes, for four mana stones per reroll.
