Dungeon Settlers Clay: Where It Drops and Its Uses
Quick answer: In the first region, clay starts dropping on floor 3 and comes only from enemies — confirmed drops from Metal Scarabs and Mud Slimes. It is not in chests and there is no clay mining node on those floors. In the second region you can mine clay out of rocks. You need roughly 7 clay per farm plot and 20 clay for a Kiln.
Where clay actually comes from
Clay is a floor-gated drop, and the gate is floor 3 of the first region, the Veil of Silence. Floors 1 and 2 produce none at all, which is why an early settlement plan built around clay stalls.
On those floors, the only source is enemy drops. Two confirmed droppers:
- Metal Scarab — the rolling beetle enemy.
- Mud Slime.
Two things it is not:
- Not from chests. A full run through the first region opened more than a dozen chests; the contents were research books, aid kits, potions, bloodwood arrows and a crown. No clay, not once.
- Not from mining nodes. There is no clay vein to mine in the first region — a point made plainly in play, with the wish that you could dig it out of the walls, which you cannot.
There is a third, occasional source: Expedition Rank rewards. Raising your rank has paid out clay directly, five at a time.
The second region is different
In the Festering Burrow, the second region, rocks can be mined for clay. So the rule "clay only drops from enemies" is a first-region rule, not a global one. If you have reached the second region, mining is back on the table — but the second region is a serious step up in difficulty, so this is not an early-game shortcut.
Two claims you will see elsewhere, and which one is right
| Claim | Where it comes from | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Clay comes from chests and from dungeon mining nodes | A competing Dungeon Settlers site | Wrong. Chests do not drop clay, and the first region has no clay node. |
| Clay drops from enemies starting on floor 3; investing in clay buildings before that is unrealistic | A Japanese demo guide posted on the Steam forums | Right, and it still holds in the Early Access release. |
This matters because the site currently ranking best for this question is the one that has it wrong, and most of the others do not say which floor at all. If you only remember one thing: floor 3, from kills, not from chests.
What clay is for
Two uses drive almost all early clay demand:
- Farm plots. After researching
Basic Farming, each plot costs roughly 7 clay — so two plots is about 14 clay. Given the food pressure in the early game, farms are usually the first place clay goes. - The Kiln, at 20 clay. The Kiln is the expensive one, and it is a gateway building: it leads into ceramics, which leads to
Dark Thorn Purification, which produces the Goddess Tears you need to clear the Dark Thorn blocking your settlement's expansion. In other words, 20 clay is the price of a bigger settlement footprint.
How to plan around the floor 3 gate
A workable order:
- Do not budget clay buildings before you can reliably reach floor 3 and come back.
- When you can, run floor 3 with the intent of farming Metal Scarabs and Mud Slimes rather than pushing deeper. Clay is a volume material, not a rare drop.
- Watch depletion. Repeatedly clearing the same floor accumulates depletion and reduces drops, which pushes you deeper whether or not you are ready. Rotate floors rather than grinding one.
- Take a camping kit if the clay run will take more than a couple of days — the whole point of farming a floor is staying on it.
What we still cannot tell you
Unconfirmed: whether clay drops more frequently on floors 4 and 5 than on floor 3. It is a reasonable expectation given how the rest of the game scales, but we have no verified numbers, so we are not stating it as fact.
FAQ
Which floor does clay start dropping on?
Floor 3 of the first region. Floors 1 and 2 do not produce clay at all.
Can I get clay from chests?
No. Chests in the first region yield research books, aid kits, potions, arrows and similar — not clay.
Can I mine clay?
Not in the first region, which has no clay node. In the second region, the Festering Burrow, rocks can be mined for clay.
How much clay do I need for a Kiln?
- A farm plot is about 7.
